Why I Wish “Fate: The Winx Saga” Didn’t Exist

19 Apr

Hey everyone! It’s been 5 years since I posted on here last, and I feel really nostalgic writing this post. I don’t know if anyone is still here to see this, but I couldn’t resist coming back on here to write about my thoughts on Netflix’s new Winx Club live action. In short, I’m sorely disappointed. But I was never one for being short, so that’s what this post is for!

What ruined Fate for me right off the bat was the blatant whitewashing. When I first heard news of a live action starting its production, I was ecstatic. I had just started college and everything was starting to feel too serious in my life. News of a Winx live action really lifted my spirits and had me anticipating a little bit of magic that would bring me back to my childhood. Alas, Fate brought me the opposite of that magic. When the casting for the show was first announced, I was appalled. The incredibly diverse cast of Winx, with 3/6 girls of color, had been whitewashed. The only girl of color left was Layla. Musa (who is Asian) was to be played by a white actress who was racially ambiguous at best. Flora (who is Latina) was also to be played by a white actress. Yes, the character’s name is Terra, and the show claims that she is Flora’s cousin. However, I did some digging, and the actress’s acting resume clearly stated that her role in Fate was “Flora”. Name changing to justify whitewashing. Thanks, Netflix.

I want to focus on Musa specifically because the whitewashing was the most obvious with her, as opposed to Flora, who at least had her name changed to Terra. As a child, Winx was one of the few cartoons that made me feel represented. As an Asian American, seeing Musa on screen meant so much to me. Back then (and even now), Asian characters were often stereotypical. Musa was different. She wasn’t your typical Asian stereotype, and that was inspiring to me. My greatest passion has to be the performing arts—specifically, singing and acting. But the entertainment industry is white-dominated. All my life, I have been told that I would never be able to make it in the industry because I was Asian. Musa gave me strength, especially because she was associated with singing. I was devastated when I saw who they picked to be her actress. I am not joking when I say my heart aches every time I see that actress’s face associated with Musa’s name. Every time I search up something about Musa and I see her instead. Elisha Applebaum’s casting as Musa felt like a huge step backwards for representation in the entertainment industry. Netflix either couldn’t bother or didn’t want to cast a racially accurate actress for the character. They could find a real redhead for Bloom, but couldn’t bother to find an Asian actress for Musa. Again, thanks a lot, Netflix. This could just be me, but there’s something about the way they do the actress’s makeup in every scene that makes me feel like they’re attempting to make her look more Asian. Especially the winged eyeliner—she’s the only one out of all of them with her makeup done that way. I have seen speculation that she could possibly have some Asian blood in her, that her grandpa is somewhat Asian. That doesn’t matter. Her official casting page clearly acknowledges that her ethnic type is white. Just because she might be 10% Asian doesn’t mean she can accurately represent an Asian character. If people watching can’t even identify her as Asian, what’s the point of calling it representation? That’s like saying it’s okay for the singer Halsey, who is half black, to play Layla. That is NOT okay. The truth of it is, Elisha is white/white-passing, and cannot accurately represent a person of color. This point is the main reason why, as the title suggests, I wish Fate: The Winx Saga didn’t exist. It has permanently tainted Musa’s character. This whitewashed version of Musa will always be officially attached to Winx, and I hate it. The show I loved for its diversity has been permanently linked to this blatant case of whitewashing.

Besides the whitewashing, I just thought the show as a whole did absolutely no justice to Winx. If they didn’t have the same names as the Winx, I would never have realized this show’s source material was Winx Club. Winx was lighthearted and heavily centered around friendship. Fate is unnecessarily dark and the “Winx” seem to hate each other. Friendship where? I forced myself to watch the whole show, and all 5 girls acted like they couldn’t stand being near one another. It would have been refreshing to see a fun, bright show that stayed true to what Winx Club was. At this point, I feel like they just tacked on the Winx name to get more views. The writing was also…questionable. There was this weird love triangle between Bloom, Stella, and Sky that made me feel extremely uncomfortable. Dane, a new character, also made no sense to me. His personality change was very abrupt, and his obsession with the villainess was never explained. And do not get me started on the fashion. Winx Club’s outfits are iconic, but for some reason, Fate chose to style their actresses in what looked to me like something middle-aged women would wear.

Overall, if Fate was in no way connected to Winx Club, I would’ve been content to watch it as a way to pass time. Taking its affiliation with Winx into account, however, changes everything. I really hope this show gets cancelled after its next season. I don’t want it trampling all over Winx’s name more than it already has. Also, where the heck is Tecna?

Winx Club’s Advancements As Of Early 2015

2 Feb

RainbowCartoonLab-300x233 (1)

Hey, fairies! As you probably know, Season 7 of Winx Club is coming out this fall. But did you know that in early 2016, a spin off series called Winx Club WOW: World of Winx is also coming out? I, for one, am so excited. But then again, spin offs always confuse me a little… Anyway, back to news. Rainbow has also recently announced a partnership with Netflix, which should provoke joy in some of us. 😛 Last piece of news. Rainbow has joined Explora Museum to create an experience for kids called the Rainbow Cartoon Lab. It teaches them with hands-on activities how a cartoon is made, and gives them the opportunity to star in their own cartoon using a green screen! Isn’t that exciting? Wish I could be there… *sigh* They should bring everything Winx they do in Italy over here to America too! I’d love to go to Winx Rainbow Magicland. 🙂 That’s all for today. Comment down below your thoughts and don’t forget to join Caption Contest #4!

Is Winx Back Yet?

10 Jan

Hey, guys! Sonic Singer here, and I’m glad to announce that it’s a new year! Oh, that rhymes! 😛 For the last few years, every new year we have gotten a new season of Winx. But will that be the case this year? We are all aware that Rainbow recently broke up with Nickelodeon, leaving us to wonder when and where we can find new Winx episodes. We don’t know if this hiatus in Winx will be short or very long term. But at least we all have faith that Winx will continue on somewhere in the future(hopefully soon!), because Rainbow has already announced that there is going to be a Season 7, and they won’t go back on their word— will they? It is very unlikely for Rainbow to cancel Winx forever anyway, since that means they’ll be unraveling all their hard work these past 10 years on one of their most successful series. Progress on Winx is still going on, if not in terms of episodes. A new app, Winx Bloomix Quest, was recently released. Check it out below:

If apps and other products of Winx are still coming out, we should have total faith that Winx Club will continue. The only question that now remains is when?

Question: Do you think Winx will come back? If so, when?

This Winxmas…

20 Dec

pizap.com14191012451631

Hey, fairies! I’d like to enlighten you with my tips for making this Winxmas a very special one with homemade presents! Consider this my Winxmas present to you! 😉 I suggest that you give some kind of Winx gift (since this is a Winx blog), but you can add some variations to personalize the gift! I have two ideas for you, so read on!

1. Winx Pendant
To make this gift, you’ll need a base, preferably a pendant tray, but you can also use any coin. You’ll also need Mod Podge or diamond glaze (or even hot glue!), blank photo paper, strong liquid glue, jump rings, and a necklace chain (optional). First, print out your Winx picture (or any picture you like), cut it into the shape of your base to fit, and stick it onto your base with your glue. Letting it dry, pour your Mod Podge or glaze on top of the picture until the substance forms the desirable dome shape. Let that dry, and then, if you used a coin, glue a piece of card stock the size and shape of your coin onto it, and then hot glue a jump ring onto the card stock (make sure only 1/4 of the jump ring is covered by the coin!). Then, no matter what base you are using, if you like, slide a necklace chain through the jump ring or pre-made hole (pendant tray), and voila! A finished gift! 🙂

2. Winx Beauty Supply
To create this cute gift, you’ll need a bottle of nail polish or lip gloss (either one, but if you picked the nail polish, you’ll also need a cute nail filer), a printed out Winx (or something else) picture (big enough to wrap around the nail polish/lip gloss), ribbon, and handmade tags (with any message you want). All you have to do is simply apply glue to the back of the picture and wrap it around your nail polish/lip gloss so that it sticks. Then, tie a ribbon (with your tag attached) around it. If you chose nail polish and have the cute nail filer, then make sure that when you wrap the ribbon around the bottle, it also goes around the nail filer, too. And that’s all! Easy and cute!

I hope you use these ideas as your gifts this year or next, and happy holidays! 🙂

How To Make Your Winx OC

29 Nov

Hey, fairies! A great idea for a boring day during breaks is to make your own Winx OC! For those who don’t know what an OC is, it is an original character, hence the abbreviation. I am fairly new at this, as I just started a few days ago, but it is very fun for me. 🙂 Anyways, I think a good app to use for the drawing of your OC is You Doodle Plus, which is what I use. It has lots of great patterns and lets you draw on top of Winx bases, using the “edit a photo” option in the app.

Making your OC with the You Doodle Plus app is very easy, and doesn’t take very long. You’ll be very happy with the results, and you can even share your creation on a website like DeviantART. just be sure to credit whoever made the base you, and add a watermark so nobody will steal it. If you upload your OC on DeviantART, share with me the link below! Here is mine:

Is Rainbow Ever Settling Down?

26 Nov

winclub_logo

Hey, guys! As you can see in the title, this post is dedicated to the question of Rainbow S.R.L ever settling down with one company. First Rainbow started with 4Kids, making episodes with them until about the middle of Season 3. This came as a disappointment to the fans of Winx. Then, they decided to go to Nickelodeon, whom they created episodes with until the end of Season 6. After deciding they weren’t satisfied, they broke it up with Nickelodeon, leaving us all Winxless right now. We fans are expecting for the inevitable, and the inevitable is that Rainbow is going to do what they have been doing with different companies until the end of Winx. Or at least until they and we finally feel like the company they found fulfills our Winx desires. This is what we all want, but we can’t know for sure if this will ever happen. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Question: Do you think Rainbow is ever settling down with one company?

Daphne x Thoren

31 Aug

Hello, fairies! It’s good to be back! 🙂 Thank you to Sweetbreeze Tornado for the warm welcome! Today’s post will cover the latest couple of Winx Club. A cute one at that, too! 😉 When they first met, we could tell there was some chemistry between them, but who knew whether or not they would actually become a couple? As Season 6 went on, it was clear that they were falling for each other, and obviously, the Winx approved.

Daphne_&_Thoren

They seem to work well together, and really get each other. Fortunately, we haven’t seen any drama between them—yet. A couple like that seems too good to be true. I keep thinking that something bad will happen. Either they start fighting, Daphne discovers that Thoren has a girlfriend, or something along those lines. But then again, who knows? Maybe Rainbow will decide to make them the perfect couple of the show.

Question: What do you think? Are Daphne and Thoren the perfect couple? Will it work out? Will something happen? Share your thoughts below! 🙂

Why Did Nick Cancel Winx?

22 Jul
Why did Nick cancel Winx?

Winx-Club-All-transformations-the-winx-club-24661865-720-410E

Hi, there. Today I’m going to ask this simple question, but the real reason is deep inside the history of Winx in the North American market and the United Kingdom.

Before we can go to the Nickelodeon years we have to go through the history of the both eras.

2004
At the 2004 toy fair, Iginio Straffi is approached by 4kids and Mattel to bring his show to the US. Winx Club premiered in June ’04 to great ratings for being the only girl oriented show on the block. 4kids did trims and cuts to the story, but unexpecting viewers didn’t find until
the fan subtitles after the show was canceled in 2007.

After the season finale in December, Mattel released 7 inch dolls based on the series. They came with a DVD showing a sneak peak at the show and a summary by Bloom about the characters. They were a big hit during the x-mas season.

2005
Before the second season premiered in September, the Miguzi block on Cartoon Network aired the show during the summer of ’05, this was great to introduce new viewers into the show, they also aired season 2 and 3 before the block went off the air.

New dolls featuring the Winx and their pixies came out and weren’t as popular as last year. They were typically hard to find since retailers put the dolls to the back of the shelves.

2006/07
4kids got the third season earlier than Italy, they did not have enough money to hire translators so then they used the rai English script.
The first couple of episodes were more faithful than before but Rainbow was fed up with the butchering of content. Finally in the fall of ’07 4kids aired the last episode of season 3 as a “series finale”

2008-11
This period of time I’d like to call “the Winx online renaissance” Even when back in 2009 when we didn’t have English dub of season four,
An awesome dude called BanjoGate subbed the entire series. And for Bloggers we got: Winx Fairies, Una Di Noi and many more. I can’t remember, but this was a good era.

2011
In February the online Winxers got an rude awakening when Viacom announced that they would buying 30% percent of Rainbow.

We divided when the news came.

One wanted Rainbow to be free, One wanted just to watch Winx Club on TV.

Well honestly that didn’t happen once the retooled, fancy smancy Winx Club came on. Man people were shocked of plain nostalgia draw in really good ratings. LIKE SPONGEBOB RATINGS. And Nick kicked Disney’s butt that weekend. It all came for a price.

Once again we came divided:

4kids, Rai English and Nick fans.

What astonishes me is that together we did great fanart, writing, videos. These same group of people managed to cuss each other out, and I think killed this this amazing place on the net where you find the most encouraging, kind people on the planet. Sorry to get preachy, but this means a lot to me and I don’t want to make it personal.

Anyway, let’s talk about Nick and it’s short attention span for less than stellar ratings, it’s the poor marketing!

Example: iCarly. Remember when Nick was obsessed with this show? I do. So I’m a fan of iCarly and they’re this big love triangle that’s in show, so I don’t know what happened to it, they started marketing the episodes as “movies” and this is when it was at the peak of popularity so they did good but later Nick had the audacity to NOT advertise the show and expect the “movie” to do good. The last season had 6 episodes.

The rai English fans treated Nick like it was king: 4kids: treated like dirt. The only way we got along was to bash Nick for its changes.

The show premiered on the nickelodeon event, “Nickelodeon: Epic Summer. All the new shows got cancelled before the end of 2011.

Well almost all.

The Legendarium Plot (Re-post)

17 Jul

Hi, this is Sweetbreeze Tornado, from WinxBiz, and I’ve had the honour to become a co-author of this blog. Since Sonic Singer’s taking a “summer off” and Saffron/Maggie and winxharmonix1 haven’t posted lately, I would like to re-post what I have said on the WinxBiz Forum, just to keep you visitors from being bored here. 😛 Here is what I have said:

Anyone like the Legendarium plot this season? I do, but it’s kind of really repetitive.

-Selina summons creatures from Legendarium to fight the Winx.
-Winx fight said creature.
-Winx ask Daphne for help.
-Winx defeat said creature.
-Winx reconcile.Honestly, it’s really great and all, but we fans would call it “repetitive”. Yes, there were some differences every time, but the “base” of the sequences are the same. Couldn’t they have gotten rid of sequence numbers 3 and 5 for some so it doesn’t seem like the Winx lack knowledge or act like children? They’re in their 20s!

Question: What about you? What do YOU think of this whole Legendarium plot?
